The Immortal Rules

The Immortal Rules

by Julie Kagawa

SYNOPSIS:

“In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.”
Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.
Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of “them.” The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked–and given the ultimate choice. Die…or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend–a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn’t easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what–and who–is worth dying for

Who do I have to bite to get the next book?

I can’t believe how much I got to love this book.. a vampire book nonetheless!
Let me tell you something: I don’t like vampires.
That’s a fact. I don’t find them sexy, I don’t find them scary.. and they better not find me.
I’ve been reading some vampire books though over the years, it’s true, but I am not a fan of this genre and I am even a bit annoyed when people tend to make tourists think that show

:p

Anyways, this book is something entirely different.. it’s AMAZING! (and no, I didn’t press the caps lock by mistake, it really is an awesome book – vampires included). The characters are amazing (and realistic.. yeah, you heard me right – realistic vampires – whichever that means – are my thing now) and the plot makes you turn page after page like there’s no tomorrow.

“You are a monster.” Kanin’s deep voice droned in my head again, as I forced myself to move, to walk away. “You will always be a monster, there is no turning back from it. But what type of monster you become is entirely up to you.”

The world building:

I found this vampire world to be quite creepy, some sort of vampire dystopian world that I wouldn’t want to live in no matter how cool or ass kicking I would be (modesty much?).

Now, you are free to tell me otherwise, but for me the world was pretty original or at least different.
I liked where Allie came from (her old life, old friends, the description of this new world), I liked how she was trained as a vampire (and the guy that turned her into one), I liked the group of people she meets on the way (and how she falls in love not only with the boy, but with what seems to be a family) and I loved the hope they had for the vampire-free land… Is it real, will they make it, will they be safe, will she be able to stay with them that long without feeding? So many questions, and there are so many more to ask.

“Damned. Alone. You don’t understand now, but you will. There will come a time when the road before you splits, and you must decide your path. Will you choose to become a demon with a human face, or will you fight your demon until the end of time, knowing you will forever struggle alone?”

The main character:

Allie is amazing! Even though she makes some mistakes in the beginning (and it costs her her friends’ lives) she can usually get out of every situation and she can take care of herself really well.

I saw her first as a human, then as a new born vampire, I cheered for her courage and I cared for her struggle to keep her last bit of humanity. I saw her making new friends and losing old ones, I saw her trying to survive both as human and vampire and she started to really grow on me.

She was not whiny, she didn’t need someone to keep her safe, she learned quickly and could take care of herself and the others.

I loved to see her adjust to the new “life” (if I am allowed to call it that), because you see, she hated Vampires with all her heart and becoming one herself was a decision born only from her deep need to remain somehow… alive (or at least not to die.. aka turn into nothing).
She gave up her world but she still fought her vampire needs with a strength that I can only admire.

Yeah, she was a bit vulnerable too, but that was the best part – seeing how under that tough skin there was still the shadow of a heart that used to beat, there was still a memory of the warmth that used to flow through her veins… she was both strong and weak, but was such a great female character!

The love story:

He smiled, a real one this time, though his voice remained teasing.
“So, what do you think I am?”
Naive, I thought at once. Naive, brave, selfless, incredible and much too kind to survive this world. It’ll break you in the end, if you keep going like this. Good things never last.

It was cute. It was realistic (it took some time to grow and it took more to get past the immortal inconvenience.). It made me beg for more.

It was not that kind of I-love-you-so-I-don’t-care-when-I-find-out-that-you-are-in-fact-a-vampire cheep story. It was not love at first sight. It was not predictable. It was all that I wanted and even more. (oh, that’s a lie.. I never got enough of it, I want them both back in book 2)

The side characters were well defined and I got to are about some of them. There was humour and action and just a bit of emotion to keep you entertained and I sincerely can’t wait for the next book now.
.. And so, after all this time I got to love a vampire story. Who would have thought, huh?

Happy midnight reading!

I am not into vampire books either.  Although, I did read Twilight series.  I am interested in reading the Iron Knight by this author.  And….

I tried sooo hard to finish reading this book, but I just couldn’t! I usually read books in a day or two and I’ve had this one sitting on my desk for almost a month! I hope taking a break from it and starting it again will help!

Not all books are for all of us, so don’t feel bad if you don’t enjoy it (or if you feel like not reading it any longer).
I usually don’t even like vampire stories, but for some reason I loved this one and the next book in the series is even better.

I so need to put this on my to-reads list!
